I used to not be much of a jewelry person. In fact, I was not a jewelry person AT ALL. Anytime we would have to get dressed up, I would put on my outfit, do my hair and makeup, and then ask my husband, “So how do I look?” And Erik would almost always say, “You look beautiful, but you need jewelry.” Because I would have none on. Zero. Zip. Nada. And it wasn’t that I didn’t like jewelry or enjoy wearing it. It just somehow was always an afterthought and really not that important.
But then I got pregnant with my daughter and immediately my attitude towards jewelry changed. No, I don’t think there was some scientific, hormonal explanation for it. I think it’s simply because I discovered very early on in my pregnancy that jewelry could help me remember my soon-to-arrive daughter (not that the giant tummy and swollen ankles weren’t reminder enough).
So here are four jewelry ideas. Please note that they are all dainty necklaces because that’s my thing. If you are a chunky, statement piece kind of girl then you’re out of luck. But if you are looking for subtle options, then these will be right up your alley.
All of them are great for expectant mothers who are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their little one, moms who want a reminder of their children when they are apart, and for women who have suffered a miscarriage and are looking for a way to honor and remember the life not lived. They would make great gifts, or you could treat yourself.
So without further ado, here goes:
Ampersand Necklace: From the Etsy shop OliveYewJewels, $39. Right when I found out I was pregnant, I purchased this necklace. I wasn’t sure yet when we were going to tell other people, and so it was nice to have this necklace. It was like I was wearing a little secret out in the open.
I’ll never forget when I was visiting my best friend, Melissa. I was so excited to tell her that I was expecting. As soon as I told her, she exclaimed, “Oh! That’s why you an ampersand necklace on. Because it’s you and your baby!” I was surprised she had figured it out. Lots of people wear ampersand necklaces just because they like them. But then again, I wasn’t surprised at all. Sometimes it’s like Melissa and I are two halves of the same brain, just inside two different people:)
The necklace measures 17″ long, but you can have it customized up to 19″ for an additional fee. Mine is rose gold, but it also comes in gold and silver. The gold plated charm measures 7/32in x 9/32in.
Gold Bar Necklace- From the Etsy shop LuvLaceJewels, $23.95. The next necklace I felt the urge to purchase was one featuring my daughter’s first name (in the picture above you can only see part of her name because I deliberately try to protect her identity on the internet). Anyhow, this gold bar necklace was perfect for that. It’s 14k gold filled, 16″ long, and can hold up to 12 letters, custom coordinates, and/or Roman numerals. You can choose the alignment and the font. You can even choose to have it engraved on the back for an additional fee! So it might be neat to have your little one’s name on the front and their birthdate on the back. Or their birth weight and height. Or the time they were born. The possibilities are endless.
Birthstone Necklace- From the Etsy shop LolaBeanJewelry, $39. No offense, but it seems that 90% of the birthstone jewelry I see looks outdated or grandma-like. So I immediately fell in love with this one when it appeared in my Etsy feed. J was born in November, so the gemstone is Citrine. But they have all of the birthstones, both precious and semi-precious available to choose from, and they are soooo beautiful, I am tempted to buy all of them just for the fun of it! Seriously, the photo doesn’t do it justice; this necklace lays right on the collarbone and is incredibly delicate looking.
You can choose from 14k gold filled, sterling silver, rose gold-filled, or 14k gold chain, and each necklace is 16″ in length, but you can also request to have it longer. Although, I don’t know why you would because then it would lay nestled in your throat. This shop is seriously worth checking out if you are in the market for birthstone jewelry in general! They have lots of different necklaces and bracelet designs to choose from, and they are all amazing.
Initial Necklace- From the Etsy shop MignonandMignon, $29.65. I felt like my husband was getting no love in the jewelry department, so the last necklace I purchased celebrated him too! I chose to have three pendants put on the chain, each with one of our initials on it, but you could have as many pendants added as you want. Although if you have 19 children like Michelle Duggar, this necklace might not be for you since it would take away from the whole delicate, subtle vibe. The chain is 17.5″ long, and each pendant is 12mm. And you can choose from gold, silver, or rose gold-plated (I chose silver).
I love all of these necklaces. Every time I touch the one I am wearing or take a look at myself in the mirror, I smile when I think of my daughter. But now that she is 14 months old, they have become even more special. She will sit in my lap and point at my necklace, and we will talk about why I am wearing it. She loves when I say her name, or when I say, “‘E’ is for Erik; that’s Dada!” One day all of these necklaces will be hers, and I am excited about that too. Then, she can wear them to school or a dance or her first day at college and think of me too. At least, that’s my hope.
And now I want to hear from you! Do you have jewelry that helps you think of your kids?
