The moment Baby J was born, she had long fingernails. Really long fingernails.
Actually, Baby J’s nails look just like my mother’s, who passed away when I was seventeen. And I had long since forgotten what my mother’s nails looked like until I was cradling Baby J there in the delivery room. But the moment I saw her nails and how they naturally grew to a point, I suddenly remembered that my mom’s grew the same way. I caught my breath. It was a great moment.
But that’s not why I won’t cut Baby J’s nails. I won’t cut them because I did it one time, and it was terrible. Erik had commented that morning about how long they were getting, so I decided to pull out the baby nail clippers. You know, the pair that parent has and somehow feels obligated to buy, and I began to clip her nails. I had cut eight perfectly when it happened. I accidentally clipped her skin. What ensued was terrible. First, the moment of pause on her face, followed by the pouty lip, and then the wail of tears. I had never hurt her before, and she sobbed and sobbed. I kept repeating how it was an accident and asked her to forgive me, but she only wanted her dad to hold her for about an hour afterwards.
A Better Solution
And so the next time her nails got a bit too long, I got creative. I grabbed my own nail file, which is like this and began filing away. It helped that she was asleep, but the fact that nail file was crystal was also huge. I didn’t have to file hard or for a long time, and each nail was just the right length in under 5 minutes.
So now I officially don’t cut her nails. I wait until she is napping, and I file them. I am glad that I discovered this little trick. And before you say anything, yes I know that clipping my daughter’s skin won’t be the last time that I accidentally make her cry. As a parent, I am bound to somehow make her cry again. I am just glad that I get to save the tears for something else, like the first time she is grounded.
How about you? Have you tried to use a nail file on your baby? What are some of your nail clipping stories?
